1. What are they using and how?
Teens and young adults are predominantly using Snapchat and Instagram for instant chats and group chats as well as sharing images and video. Predominantly via their mobile phones.
Social media is ubiquitous and is present on most platforms,
video games - group chat that is mutable,
Youtube, Pinterest, Reddit via comments

At KES pupils report they predominantly use
Snapchat story (how it works. 24hr) and filters, groups up to 200
Instagram groups limited to 15
2. School policy
e-safety policy
Y1 - 3
No mobile use during the school day.
No iPad use at break or lunch
Y4 +
not in class unless teacher allows.
Social media is blocked at school.
Filtering is in place as well.
3. When a situation does occur
If a problem does arise it often occurs outside of school time.
The school will deal with it and has experience and policies in place.
Necessary discussions, sanctions and pupil education may occur following an incident.
4. Building Trust
Apps for control and monitoring at home
These can and will often will erode trust.
This can push them to create other accounts they will use but not share with you.
It is an option that can be used to enforce positive behaviour and as a sanction.
Real Instagram account (“rinsta”) for a wider audience and then keep a “finsta” (friends-only or “fake” Instagram) for their closest friends.

Talk to them is best and a home agreement such as...
No phones in bedrooms past 9 pm.
Charge overnight downstairs. Etc.

Childnet International will be presenting the session on Internet Safety and Gaming. Safety with technology such as the internet and mobile phones is undoubtedly a worry for parents and we are keen to work with you to help provide students with up to date advice about ways in which they can keep themselves safe. Hopefully, the education that the students receive during the day will enable our students to continue to use technology
wisely and safely.
Mr Blow is a Design and Technology teacher with many years’ experience teaching young people to use technology and the internet positively and sensibly and Mr Mapstone is our Head of IT and Computing. Their session on
Being a Digital Citizen will be looking at how to create a positive digital reputation as well as how to avoid a damaging online footprint.
Y3
Mr Mapstone and Mr Blow. Their session on Using New Technology will be looking at the safe use of social media, how to create a positive digital profile and digital organisation.
6. Impact of social media - parents and teens
Teens get social.
Increasingly from Year 2, perhaps communicating less to parents but communicating more to peers in person and augmenting this with Social media.
